Messy Textured Curls Hair Tutorial

I am currently growing my hair out after learning the tough lesson of cutting it shorter than I wanted. This has happened to me so many times, yet I do it again and again. Right now, my favorite way to style my hair is a textured, messy curl look. I have a round face, so I try to give my hair as much body as possible to NOT enhance it. The picture below is the final product, so if you like this look, continue reading!

So I have fine hair, but quite a bit of it. It currently has some pretty good texture because I had bleach on it a couple weeks ago when I got it lightened some more. However, I have the hardest time getting my hair to have volume, even when I use volumizing hair products.

I use a 1" curling iron made my Hot Tools, you can find it here. This curling iron heats up to 430 degrees and I use it at the hottest temperature, but you can control the heat and use any temperature you want. For my hair though, I need it hot so that it holds a curl as much as possible! Also, please excuse how dirty my curling Iron is, I use it after doing my makeup a lot so it's got foundation smudges on it! To start, I curl small sections of hair at a time, leaving about 1 inch of hair at the bottom to give it that "beachy" look. After releasing each section from the curling iron, I DO NOT touch it, I leave it as-is so that the curl can cool off, this will help it hold better. Once everything is cooled, it will look like the pictures below.

I know, I know, not super great looking curls, BUT they will get there. I let my curls sit like this while I do my makeup or at least start my makeup. It takes everything I have to not touch them because they're so unflattering at this stage. Patience is something I have a hard time with when it comes to hair. Once I am ready to put product in my hair, I shake the curls loose and scrunch them a little bit.

My two current favorite products for this style are the Chi Spray Wax and the new Kenra HiDef Matte Finish Hairspray. I want my hair to have as much texture as possible with these curls, but I don't want it to have a crunchy hold. Neither of these products will do that and they also smell amazing. I start with the spray wax and lift large sections of my hair up while spraying the product on, once I coat all of my hair (lightly, don't use too much) I scrunch it a little bit until the product dries. I then finish with the hairspray, spraying a generous amount all over while piecing my hair apart and scrunching. I make sure to lift sections of my hair up to also spray on the sections underneath and I piece everything apart and scrunch it until I get my desired look.

The final look is pictured below! I will also list links to alternative products to use that I've tried and also like below the final look pictures. I'll also list some more affordable options that I haven't necessarily tried, but that will be similar to the ones I've used. These are just the two products I am using currently but I highly recommend both of them. The Kenra Hairspray has a matte finish, so it will almost take away shine from your hair but it leaves it looking and feeling very textured, messy and beachy looking without any crunch whatsoever.

Alternative Spray Waxes:

Sexy Hair Play Dirty Spray Wax
Paul Mitchell Flexible Style Spray Wax

If you don't want a wax, but want texture:

More affordable options:

L'Oreal Txt It Tousle Wave Mist (also similar to B&B Surf Spray

Chi Infra Texture Dual Action Hairspray
